According to all the on-line Dell documents I could find, the integrated audio does not have S/PDIF capability. It has an Analog Line Out connection.

The Dell supplied M/B's, although made by Intel or whoever are custom built boards. Same with the BIOS, they are not made to be flashed with Retail BIOS's. Bottom line, if you want a PC with "standard" components you will need something other than a Dell.
But, most that want the 'digital" output go with the higher grade sound cards as they also want the better fidelity of the optional cards such as the Audigy 2ZS.
