Thank-you for this tip! I was just about to forego the on-board video by installing a secondary PCI video card when I saw this hint. Once I set the BIOS onboard buffer to 8Mb, all of my issues went away! Yes, an Optiplex with 2Gb RAM will run Win7 quite successfully.

Thanks again for the suggestion. I did the diagnostic process when the drive went bad in the original desktop machine. It was able to read some of it but indicated certain failures.
Thanks, Hanspuppa. Unfortunately I have been throught the Disk Management menu already, with no success. It requests that you "rescan disks", then re-boot if it does not detect it. I have done that ... still no detection. HJ
I now have a BYTECC BT-300 USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Adapter. When I connect this device with the IDE drive to my laptop USB, my Windows XP detects the new drive but does not assign a drive. Thus, I have not means of accessing the IDE drive, to my knowlege.

...the board that DO NOT HAVE ethernet. Uninstall any yellow ! in device manager and then install the correct drivers. No such thing as one size fits all for Chipset OR for Network drivers. There are Multiple versions of each.
Therefore, should I erase the drivers, then run the Intel Chipset utility and then install the drivers?
