Oddly enough it seems that the track pad/mouse pointer stops working when the screen is black. e.g. during the time the screen is black the pointer on the screen doesn't move. I thought it might be related to the back light on the keyboard or the touch buttons.

You can open Battery Meter from Control Panel or from the battery icon on taskbar (bottom right corner). The Battery Meter can be used to check the Status, Life and Health of the Battery. Check what it says there about the battery health.
